Set in the '80s, this installment was the first to hit current-gen consoles, and features the expected Zombies cooperative mode and multiplayer suite. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the continuation of the Treyarch’s Black Ops universe. A sequel, Alan Wake 2, was announced shortly after this re-release, and recently had a great showing during this month’s Summer Games Fest.
In October 2021, a remaster featuring an improved framerate, up-ressed assets, and 4K visuals was released. However, thanks to word of mouth, console pack-ins, bundles, backwards compatibility, a pseudo-sequel, and an eventual port to PC, Alan Wake managed to stay relevant for over a decade, going from commercial failure to cult-hit. Coming out the same week as industry juggernauts like the first Red Dead Redemption, a new Prince of Persia, and Super Mario Galaxy 2, it struggled commercially, selling just 145,000 units in its first two weeks. When it first released as an Xbox 360 exclusive 13 years ago, this send up of Stephen King horror and Twin Peaks struggled to find its audience. But after his wife goes missing in the most bizarre of circumstances, Wake too begins a grim journey as unsettling and surreal as the novels he writes. Developed by Remedy, the studio behind the original Max Payne and 2019 critical darling Control, Alan Wake follows the titular character, a successful crime-thriller author in the throes of a two-year stint with writer’s block, as he visits the sleepy town of Bright Falls, Washington. Alan Wake Remastered will lead another remarkable month for Sony’s online game subscription service, alongside 2020’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and the lesser known but gorgeous Endling: Extinction Is Forever. The news first hit via an early leak from French retailer Dealabs on June 28 before being later confirmed by Playstation.
Four months ahead of its long-awaited sequel, Alan Wake Remastered (the upscaled re-release of the 2010 cult-hit), will be free to download for Playstation Plus subscribers in July.
